Good-Bye
David and I loved to relax on the porch in the cool of the
morn, sippin’ from a mug and watchin’ the squirrels scamper
round ‘n round. Then up the Palms they raced to rattle the
leaves and watch them fall. They were like kids.
Wouldn’t be long before the pure white Ibis showed up for
breakfast. They strolled along nice and easy like, waitin’ for
just the right desire. Then down plunged the long, scarlet
beak and up came the pride. Florida Ibis can bring up
the best of what’s down under.
Not far from the Ibis colony is “Baby Girl’s” house. She is a
very young gopher turtle. No way she’s comin’ out with those
hooligans runnin’ round. She’s even shy around us.
Across the way is “Runner’s” place. He won’t show if other
animal’s are around, yet he doesn’t care if we are near.
He used to live right in front of the porch, only us women
ran him off … all that cacklin’ and carryin’ on. He didn’t
move too far though.
In the middle of the front yard is an island of Palms and
Philodendron. This is where “Racer” lives. He’s about
about 41/ft and can be a little testy. I don’t pay him
no mind, just gotta watch his tail.
Then there’s the Hawk birds. The mates have been here
since we built the house; they are very territorial. Recently
there was a holy dust-up. A huge hawk swooped down and
tried to take over the back property.
In my mind, I could see my David’s face turn red,
his fist in the air. This ain’t gonna happen.
The outsider got the boot.
Over the years, David and I heard that some city folk
didn’t like our place – “The Ponderosa” – as David
called it. It was too boring, they couldn’t stand it.
That’s okay, we love it. Brings us close to
nature and one another. We are filled with
peace and contentment.
David and I had decided that when we passed
away there would be no good-bye … we would
just wait till we were together again.
